Pottery and Ceramic Art

The majority of my ceramic work is wheel thrown, functional stoneware. Mostly things that can be used as dinnerware, especially bowls, mugs, and plates. I generally focus on function first and create simple forms and add interest through glaze patterns and interactions.

Bisque Fired Cups
Bisque Fired Cups

I usually buy commercially produced stoneware clay which I purchase in 50lb. boxes. I throw most forms on the wheel and trim the bottom of each piece when it is leather hard. I bisque fire to cone 04 and then apply liquid glazes by dipping pouring or brushing. Then I glaze fire to cone 6 to complete the process.

The Clay Studio

I have slowly turned half of the basement of our home into a small clay studio. I also have an electric kiln set up in the garage. I've also built a bunch of shelves and created an area to glaze pots.
